Tea towels originated in Great Britain over a hundred years ago, used for.. tea! The original tea towels were made of linen, which could be used to dry fine china without scratching. The towels were also used to line tea trays, as a covering for warm cakes or pastries served during tea time, or even a covering for the tea pot to help prevent heat loss. Over time, cotton came into use for tea towels, being more durable, less expensive, and easier to launder. In America, the term “tea towel” is sometimes used interchangeably with “kitchen towel”, although tea towels were never intended as general-purpose kitchen towels.
Tea towels have been frequently embellished with embroidery, or printed with calendars, maps, or commemorative pictures. We offer both cotton and linen tea towels, all suitable for either embroidery or printing. Four of our tea towels are cotton, in either plain white, or with color accent stripes. For the purists, scroll down to see our two linen offerings, our classic natural linen towel as well as our new oatmeal towel. Pick your favorite for your craft project!
